Design of an online supermarket application

This project aimed to visualize the steps of a shopping experience, focusing on accessibility and ease of use. Using some methods such as benchmarking, usability testing, and accessibility analysis usability issues and pain points could be found and improved throughout the iterative design process.

ACCESSIBILITY ANALYSIS

With a focus on accessibility, the research phase included among other methods an accessibility analysis of existing products offering online grocery shopping. The accessibility analysis was based on the basic principles of WCAG which involve:

  • Perceivable – Information and components of a user interface must be presented to users in ways that they can perceive.

  • Operable – Components and functionality of a user interface and navigation must be manageable and available from a keyboard.

  • Understandable – User interface information and management must be comprehensible and understandable.

  • Robust – Content must be robust enough to be reliably interpreted by a wide range of different users, including assistive tools.

Pain points and accessibility issues were found in existing products. With the research results the design phase explored options and opportunities intending to solve these issues and create a more accessible product.

PROTOTYPE AND VALIDATION

The research and the accessibility analysis resulted in a prototype that would take the user through the entire process of comparing, shopping, and completing a purchase at an online grocery store aiming to solve the earlier discovered pain points and accessibility issues. Another second accessibility analysis was carried out to measure whether the prototype had solved the discovered problems which indicated that the new prototype was more accessible providing an easier and more intuitive user experience.
